Semi-parametric mixed effects models for longitudinal data with applications in business and economics

چکیده
Longitudinal data is becoming increasingly common in business, social sciences, and biological sciences due to the advantages it offers over cross-section data in modeling and incorporating heterogeneity among subjects and in being able to make causal inferences from observational data. Parametric models and methods are widely used for analyzing longitudinal data for continuous, discrete, and count data occurring in these disciplines. Some popular models are Gaussian, Logit, and Poisson fixed and random effects models. These models are unreliable in situations in which the link function is nonlinear and the form of nonlinearity is not known with certainty. This paper employs a semiparametric extension of fixed and random effects models called generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) to analyze several longitudinal data sets. These semi-parametric models are flexible and robust extensions of generalized linear models. Following Wood [19], the GAMMs are represented using penalized regression splines and estimated by penalized regression methods treating the penalized component of each smooth as a random effect term and the unpenalized component as a fixed effect term. The degree of smoothness for the unknown functions in the linear predictor part of the GAMM is estimated as the variance parameter of the term. Applications of GAMMs studied include analysis of anti-social behavior, decision to use a professional tax preparer, and analysis of patent data on manufacturing firms. For each application, several GAMMs are compared with their parametric counterparts.

Effects of Business Cycles on Bilateral Trade Flows in Eurozone Countries
In economic theory, various determinants are considered to explore their effects on trade patterns. Accordingly, business cycles indicate turbulences in economic activities. Business cycles and their fluctuations cause a change in demand for goods and services from the other country then it can affect trade flows. In this study, by using a gravity model, we study the effects of business cycles ...
متن کاملSemi-parametric Quantile Regression for Analysing Continuous Longitudinal Responses
Recently, quantile regression (QR) models are often applied for longitudinal data analysis. When the distribution of responses seems to be skew and asymmetric due to outliers and heavy-tails, QR models may work suitably. In this paper, a semi-parametric quantile regression model is developed for analysing continuous longitudinal responses. The error term's distribution is assumed to be Asymmetr...
متن کاملConditional Dependence in Longitudinal Data Analysis
Mixed models are widely used to analyze longitudinal data. In their conventional formulation as linear mixed models (LMMs) and generalized LMMs (GLMMs), a commonly indispensable assumption in settings involving longitudinal non-Gaussian data is that the longitudinal observations from subjects are conditionally independent, given subject-specific random effects. Although conventional Gaussian...
متن کاملTransition Models for Analyzing Longitudinal Data with Bivariate Mixed Ordinal and Nominal Responses
In many longitudinal studies, nominal and ordinal mixed bivariate responses are measured. In these studies, the aim is to investigate the effects of explanatory variables on these time-related responses. A regression analysis for these types of data must allow for the correlation among responses during the time. To analyze such ordinal-nominal responses, using a proposed weighting approach, an ...
متن کاملA Fast Algorithm for Using Semi-Parametric Random Effects Model for Analyzing Longitudinal Data
Mixed effects models are frequently used for analyzing longitudinal data. Normality assumption of random effects distrbution is a routine assumption for these models, violation of which leads to model misspecification and misleading parameter estimates. We propose a semi-parametric approach using gradient function for random effect estimation. In the approach, we relax the normality assumption ...
